I was wondering if anyone was able to give me some hints and tips about finding a career in the Training and Development area. I'm a qualified accountant by trade and more recently had extensive experience with Management Information systems. I have been a project manager/business analyst for the past 3 years and found the most enjoyable aspect of my role was the training side. As such I was thinking of making a career change and leveraging off those training and interpersonal skills I have developed to move into a specific training role (preferably training of financial or management information systems).
If anyone would be able to get in contact with me to discuss further that would be much appreciated. Angelina
There is a better marketplace for accountants than trainers at the moment, so don't move too soon. - I believe your best bet would be to focus on a specialist niche initially - "Finance for Project Management" put together some original programmes and pitch them to former employees / contacts and larger training companies first.
Hi Nigel. Thanks for the tips! Ater a bit more researching it does appear that ths is not the time to be doing a huge career move! But I will keep at it while looking for more regular project roles.
Thanks again
That sounds like the right decision - you could still do some networking to take you towards a training role in the future and take every opportunity to design and deliver training projects in your current work.
Have you considered some part-time weekend / evening lecturing work? Universities and colleges are often seeking part-time business and accountancy lecturers. (the rates are not great - but the experience and contacts could be).
Thanks Nigel.
Agreed that perhaps some part time work teaching may be in order! I was also thinking of doing some volunteer work training computer skills at the charity I work for.
And as long as I try and keep my contacts up, I hope that in the future it will be an easier transition.
Thanks for the ideas!
