About me

I started over 30years ago in 1976 not knowing where it would take me really I gained a distinction with the "London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art" in the speaking of verse and prose.

After working in drama in London and Cornwall, I gained a Distinction in Theatre Arts, at the "Hub Theatre School" St Austell, in 1992.

Then I went to University for my sins and did an honours degree in Theatre Studies and Music, in 1995.

I never in a million years believed that I would get to University. I hadn't seen an O level, or perhaps it was because they wouldn't let me see one or anything close and I had to learn to write which I eventually did, after many tears and many pieces of paper and several typewriters.

Over time I have explored different methods of working with dramatherapy and have worked with a variety of groups:-

Prisoners
People with Dementia and Alzheimer's
A Carers Group
Children with Severe Learning Disabilities
People with Mental Health issues
Secure Unit
Day Care and Residential Units

All these people have one thing in common they are all human and vulnerable and beautiful. The significance and ability shown through the dramatic process has been astonishing.

After all life is a long and precarious drama.

I always had to occupy myself as a child as I spent alot of time on my own and this has enabled me to be inventive and so this has come in handy for developing new ideas.

The first technique I worked on was a devised story building technique that I developed for working with People with Dementia (which has been published in the Dramatherapy journal). The other is an idea formulated from work in Commedia. "Archetypes and the Commedia Del Arte", which I used when I was working in a prison.

In order for me to train as a Dramatherapist I had to get a job in a related field. Anyway I decided that I would go for Acute psychiatry as this seemed to me to be exciting. I had done some kind of care work in the past but not with this group. To cut a long story short I joined an agency and they sent me to the regional secure unit. I freaked out a bit but I ended up working on an acute admission ward for 6 years. I learned a great deal about myself and others from this experience.

Anyway to really go to the ends of the earth I completed my research paper in Dramatherapy at a Prison.

I graduated with a distinction and commendation for groundbreaking work from Exeter University in 2003. The research was looking at how fairy tales can be used to address offending behaviour.

I taught the Prison module on the MA in dramatherapy course in Devon in May 2005 and then I worked in a therapeutic community in Ohio, North America for three weeks in November and December 2005.

Hi Alex. Thanks for your invitation - I am happy to be your 'friend'. I love your ideas of integrating drama and healing and probably so much more! I wish you endless good humour in your work and life.

I get my clients to change role and act out issues - which they find very useful. However I am sure you are able to go into the issues in a far more creative way.
