Golf is the ultimate mind game and your only opponent is YOURSELF.
“The fact that you might be playing in a tournament is purely immaterial to the real game which is being carried out within the mind of the player”
What is it that makes a champion golfer?
It cannot simply be put down to technique neither is it that they practise more or have a better coach, for all of leading players in the world today have an abundance of all of these. The one KEY factor that sets them apart from everyone else is that they have mastered the skills of MIND CONTROL and can apply that control when they need it most
The writer of this article is a Doctor in Neuropsychology who has never played golf in his life believes he has devised a positive thought process which will benefit every player both amateur and professional; my approach to the game makes it impossible for me to get technique and attitude confused. I am not competing with the club professional, my purpose it to totally support everything they do by helping golfers to get the mental side of their game right, in other words, helping them to focus their brains more efficiently towards improving their game of golf.
I am a psychologist, not an amateur trying to be an expert. “I have yet to meet one person who hasn’t said to me “Thank God you are not trying to teach me even more technique, but are concentrating solely on my attitude towards the game.” I am not giving the golfer philosophies but practical solutions.” It would be a mistake for me to ever consider playing golf, for them I would become a poor teacher. My approach to the game makes it impossible for me to get technique and attitude confused.”
I developed a method of Mind Control called Single Point Focus which has benefitted Ryder Cup player and the beginner alike.
“Golf is a game which is played totally in the mind, where the only real opponent is yourself” “Therefore the skills and preparation necessary to improve your game require you to be totally pro-active, meaning that the game can be prepared for as part of the self development of the players personal life”. In other words, if mental focus is lacking from a person’s life it is unlikely that they will recover it and use it for a game of golf”.
To assist with a golfer’s pro-active preparation there are two critical mind skills which can significantly help a player to remain on top of their game, they are both directed towards improving their concentration by the process known as “Single Point Focusing”.
The first skill is known as “Self Talk” where we repeat a thought over and over again in our mind.
“Self Talk is something we do continually, but its context can be either positive or negative” he said. “It is the instructions we are giving to our brain to act upon, in other words, we are writing the operating programme for the next output.”
Sadly we often speak to ourselves in a negative frame of mind, such as “I can never play a good bunker shot” or “good God I am awful at putting.”If we change this to a positive frame we will give our brain positive instructions like, “today is the day when I play my best golf”
The next mind skill of single point focus is “Visualisation”
“Visualisation is our ability to recall three-dimensional pictures which contain information from our five senses. To achieve clear images we need to go through a specific procedure.”
Visualisation in golf is crucial for its uses the powerful spatial memory of the brain and if practises any golfer can recall the shot in their mind before playing the shot. This skill can be taught through a series of simple exercises, either on the course itself or at home. In the development of Single Point Focus we have tried out the methods on a wide range of golfers, from professionals to the occasional player, and whilst there is no guarantee that you will become world class player overnight, the findings have proven highly successful.
Single Point Focus increases level of concentration and pin point focus is something that can be learnt and practised by everyone who is serious about improving the mental side of their game
I have written for those who might be interested I have written a “Step-by-step” instructional eBook entitled “Mind Focused Golf” is now available at

You will be shown how Beliefs, Attitudes, Feelings and Behaviours can be turned into a winning focus, through the “Single Point Focus” method of instruction, a vital section is devoted to the four elements on concentration, where a full explanation will explain in detail how the full powers of the brain can be programmes towards helping you to achieve a winning shot every time you play.
